Overview
The Annapurna Base Camp Trek takes you into one of the most dramatic mountain amphitheaters in the world, ringed by Annapurna I (8,091m), Hiunchuli, Gangapurna, and the sacred Machapuchare (Fishtail). Starting from Pokhara, the trail climbs through terraced farmland, Gurung villages, and dense rhododendron forest before opening into the high sanctuary. A natural hot spring at Jhinu Danda rewards you on the descent.
Day-by-day Itinerary
Arrival in Pokhara (820m)
Arrive in Pokhara by flight or tourist bus from Kathmandu. Meet your guide, trek briefing, gear check, and permit processing. Evening at leisure around Phewa Lake.
Drive Pokhara → Nayapul · Trek to Tikhedhunga (1,540m)
Drive 1.5 hrs to Nayapul trailhead. Begin trekking through Birethanti and Modi Khola valley to Tikhedhunga. Walk time: 3–4 hrs.
Tikhedhunga → Ghorepani (2,860m)
Steep climb up stone steps through rhododendron and oak forest to Ulleri village, then continue to Ghorepani — a well-known teahouse stop on the Poon Hill ridge. Walk time: 5–6 hrs.
Ghorepani → Tadapani (2,630m) via Poon Hill sunrise
Optional early hike to Poon Hill (3,210m) before sunrise for panoramic views of Dhaulagiri, Annapurna South, and Machhapuchhare. After breakfast, trek through dense rhododendron forest to Tadapani. Walk time: 5 hrs.
Tadapani → Chhomrong (2,170m)
Descend through mixed forest and terraced farmland to the Gurung village of Chhomrong, perched on a ridge above the Modi Khola with superb Annapurna South views. Walk time: 4–5 hrs.
Chhomrong → Dovan (2,600m)
Descend stone steps to the Chhomrong Khola, then climb through bamboo and rhododendron forest passing Sinuwa and Bamboo to Dovan. Walk time: 5–6 hrs.
Dovan → Annapurna Base Camp (4,130m)
Trek through Himalaya and Deurali, then follow the glacial valley to Machapuchare Base Camp (3,700m). Continue into the sanctuary to Annapurna Base Camp, surrounded by towering peaks. Walk time: 6–7 hrs.
Annapurna Base Camp → Bamboo (2,310m)
Spend sunrise at the sanctuary with early-morning alpenglow on the peaks. Descend back through the snow line and rhododendron belt to Bamboo. Walk time: 6 hrs.
Bamboo → Jhinu Danda (1,780m) via Chhomrong
Trek back through Sinuwa and down to Chhomrong, then descend to Jhinu Danda where natural hot springs await — perfect for tired legs. Walk time: 5 hrs.
Jhinu Danda → Nayapul → Pokhara
Final trek down to the trailhead at Nayapul, then drive back to Pokhara. Afternoon at leisure or onward journey to Kathmandu.
