Overview
The Poon Hill Trek is the best short trek in Nepal for spectacular Himalayan views without committing to a long expedition. The route climbs from the Modi Khola valley through Gurung villages and rhododendron forest to the viewpoint hill of Poon Hill (3,210m), where a 180° panorama of Dhaulagiri (8,167m), Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machhapuchhare greets you at sunrise. The descent loops through Tadapani and the traditional stone village of Ghandruk.
Day-by-day Itinerary
Pokhara → Nayapul · Trek to Tikhedhunga (1,540m)
Drive 1.5 hrs from Pokhara to Nayapul trailhead. Trek through Birethanti and river valley to Tikhedhunga. Walk time: 3 hrs.
Tikhedhunga → Ghorepani (2,860m)
The day's big climb: ascend the famous stone-stepped trail through Ulleri village and thick rhododendron forest up to the ridge-top village of Ghorepani. Walk time: 5–6 hrs.
Poon Hill Sunrise → Tadapani (2,630m)
Rise at 5:00 AM and hike 45 minutes to Poon Hill (3,210m) for one of the finest mountain sunrises in the world. Return to Ghorepani for breakfast, then trek through dense rhododendron to Tadapani. Walk time: 4–5 hrs.
Tadapani → Ghandruk (1,940m)
Descend through oak and rhododendron forest to Ghandruk, one of the largest and most beautiful Gurung villages in Nepal, with stone-paved streets and Annapurna South as a backdrop. Walk time: 3–4 hrs.
Ghandruk → Nayapul → Pokhara
Trek or jeep ride down to Nayapul trailhead, then drive back to Pokhara. Afternoon at leisure or onward travel to Kathmandu.
